The Clashmach is one of the main features of Huntly, standing proud to the towns western side. The main path up is an old drover’s road, a gradually climbing grassy track lined by two fences. The main route returns down this way, although there is an alternative that descends through the new forestry then along a grassy path beside the River Deveron meandering back to Huntly.
Starting from The Square in Huntly head south down Gordon Street, then on to George V Avenue until reaching the big roundabout on the A96. (1) Take care here as you cross the busy road onto the pavement on the far side, following this briefly before turning left on to a minor road past the Huntly Mart. (2)
Follow this road uphill until it turns sharply left next to a bungalow, carry on straight onto a grassy track on the right side of the house.
The path continues with sweeping views on either side, turning into fences nearer the top. Take care as the path can get quite slippery and muddy when wet so be sure to wear substantial footwear.
The path passes through two gates (3) before coming up onto an open ridge line, turn left here and head for the top, marked with a trig point. (4)
Return the same way.
